Habits are the compound interest of self-improvement. The same way that money multiplies through compound interest, the effects of your habits multiply as you repeat them.
Self-discipline enables us to grasp hold of stepping stones towards our goals and the best vision new hold of ourselves. We pause and engage in a deliberate pace with careful placement of our feet. We move at a sustainable gait with our vision coming closer.

If we set event-based goals in the future, we reinforce the fact we do not have the thing we seek and may in fact increase the affirmation to our subconscious that we have a long way to go. We are in fact reinforcing the deficiency.
Progress creates motivation to do more. It also draws on the Japanese philosophy of ‘kaizen’ which emphasizes ongoing continuous improvements over the long haul. The 1% Rule suggests if you can make daily micro-progress and combine that with consistency and time, there is a compound effect which will kick in which will drive you to achieve your greatest goals.
Take time to breathe. Learn how to breathe through the chaos. Learn how to control your breathing and most importantly do not hold your breath. This is the common natural response made by new practitioners of Jiu Jitsu. They engage in physical combat and hold their breath. Take time to practice slow and steady breathing.
